What is Platelet Rich Plasma Hair Therapy?

Today there is so much buzz around PRP, from celebrities like “The Kardashians” to Talk show hosts alike, PRP found its way into the mainstream for the healing of injuries, to rejuvenating the skin and even to regrowing hair.

What is Platelet Rich Plasma Hair Therapy? Platelet-rich plasma has become a great method for the treatment of various types of alopecia, including traction alopecia more commonly found in African Americans.

Discussions have been held by credentialed MD’s and even on “The Doctors”, a famous educational medical television show, Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has become a treatment option for men and women suffering from hair loss. According to “The Doctors”, they found that Platelet-rich plasma injections into the scalp have recently been shown to be a break-through treatment for certain types of hair loss.

In recent years, a number of small uncontrolled studies continued to demonstrate its remarkable effectiveness in stimulating hair re-growth. These results were confirmed in 2015 with the publication of a placebo-controlled randomized controlled trial that clearly and proved the treatment is both highly effective and very safe for treating balding. Individuals suffering from hair thinning are wondering if PRP is something they should try.

Platelet Rich Plasma, also known as PRP, is a non-surgical therapeutic hair restoration option. It is a procedure performed by Dr. Slater in Warner Robins and Atlanta Ga. PRP has been in use in the medical field for two decades and offers some promising potential for stimulating hair growth in men and women suffering from certain types of hair loss.

How does platelet rich plasma therapy work?

PRP works by stimulating the hair follicles and can help hair follicles go into an active growth phase. Your blood contains small cells called platelets that help stop bleeding. Platelets also contain specific growth factors that when “activated” promote healthy tissue regeneration in some patients.  The patient’s blood is drawn and then spun in a centrifuge, which has the effect of separating the platelet rich plasma from the rest of the blood. Local anesthesia is administered to the scalp so the patient feels very little discomfort or pain. The platelet-rich plasma is then injected into the scalp. Dr. Slater suggests a regime of  3 sessions depending on the patient is needed to achieve optimal results.

PRP contain special cells that are called Platelets. Platelets can cause the growth of the hair follicles by stimulating the stem cells and other cells in the microenvironment of the actual hair follicle. These Platelet cells can promote healing, accelerate tissue healing and can assist in the regeneration of tissue. The primary purpose of using PRP in hair restoration is to stimulate inactive hair follicles. PRP is also used with NeoGraft to help newly implanted hair follicles enter into an active growth phase.Inside the Platelets are many intracellular structures such as glycogen, lysosomes, and alpha granules. These granules within the PRP contain clotting factors and growth factors that are eventually released during the healing and repair process. PRP is simply the magic within our own blood!
