Female Hair Loss Treatments

Why has there just now been a big movement when it comes to creating effective “Female Hair Loss Treatments” and discovering the true causes of Female Hair Loss?

Buckhead Hair Restoration is owned and operated by Dr. Monte Slater, a double board certified physician with a passion for Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine.  Female Hair Loss Treatments were previously not really a topic at all. When it comes to hair loss and baldness, there is a different view for Men and Women. While some men are bothered by their thinning hair, no one thinks twice when a man walks into a room with a completely bald head. As a matter of fact some women associate success and sexiness when a man is bald or balding. When a female begins to lose her hair, the social stigma is very different. It is considered unattractive and it is immediately  associated with stress, or an illness. Although Hair Loss does regularly occur in women, society has yet to come to terms with it. Female hair loss can be simply emotionally damaging.

The Truth about Hair Loss in Women

There are several differences when it comes to Hair Loss in Men and Women and they go way beyond social acceptance.

Women lose their hair for a number of different reasons.  A number of factors and conditions can lead to hair loss in Women.

Just like Men, Women can experience Hair Loss due to hormones. DHT as an example causes the hair follicles to shrink, so that hair becomes thinner and eventually stops growing. Changes in hormone levels in Women can cause this type of female pattern baldness. The changes can occur during menopause, when estrogen levels drop, or when Women take certain types of birth control that increase the levels of androgens.

Hair Loss in Women Versus in Men?

A major difference between Male Hair Loss and Female Hair Loss is the timing of the Hair Loss. When a Man starts to lose Hair due to male pattern baldness, it can start as early as his 20s. Women who begin to lose their Hair due to Female pattern baldness don’t see signs of Hair Loss until their early 40s or 50s. There are some  cases when a Woman might see signs of hair loss earlier, (Alopecia) but those are less common.

Another reason for Hair Loss in Women is a shock to the system. Known as telogen effluvium, this type of hair loss occurs when the body goes through a major change or trauma. Pregnancy, crash diets and high stress levels can all lead to telogen effluvium. The good news is that this type of Hair Loss is usually temporary. Female Hair Loss Treatments that are commonly used for temporary Hair loss include Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy. Once the stress or shock has passed, the hair begins to grow again. In some cases, the cause of Hair Loss can be an external force acting on the body. Medical conditions, such as an over or under-active thyroid can lead to sudden Hair Loss, so can low iron levels, common in Women. Pulling the hair back into a tight hair style consistently can lead to Hair Loss, as well.

This brings up another reason for Female Hair Loss most common in African American females, “Traction Alopecia.” Traction Alopecia can occur when hair styles such as braids and weaves cause unnatural pulling in areas such as the hairline around the fore-head, center part, or even around the ears.

Sometimes PRP Scalp Treatments  can reverse the damage caused to the follicles by improper hair care and tight hair styles. Unfortunately more often than not  this type of Hair Loss cannot be reversed and has to be remedied with NeoGraft Hair Transplantation.

The NeoGraft FUE Hair Transplant System is ideal for Women and Men of all ethnicities. It allows for multiple Transplantations when budget is a concern or when more than one area is affected. Because with Traction Alopecia there is usually a good amount of healthy hair present in other places of the scalp, this healthy donor hair can be utilized for the Hair Transplant into the areas of complete Hair Loss.

Dr. Slater and his experienced staff offer several options for Female Hair Loss  Treatments including BHRT (Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy), if a Woman’s Hair Loss is caused by a medical condition, such as a thyroid issue, treating the underlying cause of the hair loss can also treat the hair loss.

PRP for Female Hair Loss Treatments can literally speed up the regrowth process and make the hair more dense and healthy when it does grow back. There is no guarantee that it works on all women, but we have seen it be effective more often than not. PRP contain at least 8 identifiable growth factors that are derived from the patient’s own blood. PRP  heals tissue, regenerates cells and stimulate collagen production. This type of treatment has long been used in professional sports and has proven to be effective for hair loss in women and sometimes men. Female Hair Loss Treatments and Causes are far more complex than Hair Loss in Men.

PRP can be highly effective when used as a Female Hair Loss Treatment in conjunction with BHRT ( BioIdentical Hormone Replacement Therapy), during the aging process and when thyroid issues are the cause.

PRP Scalp Therapy

During the PRP Hair Loss Treatment the Scalp is numbed and injected with PRP or Amnion. Micro-Needling is often included for best results!

Hair Loss Causes in Women “Courtesy of NeoGraft”.

There are a variety of causes for hair loss in women. Hair loss can be triggered by a short term event such as stress and pregnancy, or as a side effect from a medication. Long term hair loss can be due to genetics or a symptom of something else occurring in the body.

Diagnoses include:

  • Androgenetic alopecia: female pattern baldness due to a shortened growth cycle within the hair follicle characterized by thinning over the crow, widening of the part, and a smaller ponytail
  • Telogen effluvium: shedding of hair due to stress/ temporary
  • Anagen effluvium: rapid hair loss after the hair follicles’ growth cycles are impaired (typically associated with chemotherapy)
  • Traction alopecia: hair loss due to trauma to the hair follicles (typically from tight hairstyles pulling the hair)
  • Hyperandrogenism: hair loss due to the excessive production of androgens (male hormones)”
